My old computers get wiped and revived with Neverware’s CloudReady software, effectively turning the computer into a Chromebook. You could install any number of increasingly friendly and lightweight Linux distros on an older computer. There are Windows alternatives out there.Within five years, I think ‘minimum system requirements’ will effectively be a thing of the past. I fully expect Microsoft to release a cloud version of Windows within the next year or so. As long as it can run a web browser, it can stream Windows from Microsoft’s servers. That means the spec of your PC or laptop is almost irrelevant. It already is in the corporate space, and it won’t be long before it’s a consumer offering. I think it’s only a matter of time before Windows is delivered via the cloud. Windows will be a cloud OS before long.If Microsoft senses there’s a PR disaster in the offing, it could easily tweak the requirements to make Windows 11 run without the TPM and on older processors. I’ve installed the leaked beta on computers that don’t meet the minimum requirements and it’s worked fine. Windows 10 is as a widely used as those other two, and with Windows 11 potentially leaving many PCs stuck on Windows 10, even that 2025 cut-off date seems improbable. Windows XP and Windows 7 were both supported for much longer than planned, because Microsoft was squeamish about cutting off operating systems still in widespread use. Microsoft has a poor record when it comes to cutting off its own operating systems. Microsoft has a terrible record with cut-off dates. And with Windows 10 now effectively feature complete, there shouldn’t be any major upgrades that will make your system even slower over the next four years. Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be supported until at least 2025. Even if your PC or laptop won’t run Windows 11, your computer is not about to stop functioning. However, if you have a device that doesn’t have the TPM or a sufficiently snappy processor, there’s no need to panic.
